The South Devon Players are an award winning, small non-profit amateur/community theatre group based in Brixham Devon, founded in 2005.
All members, performers and helpers are unpaid - all money raised goes directly back into the group - towards the next show!
We rehearse weekly in Brixham and specialise in newly written plays (by our members) about local history and legends. These plays are performed locally, often in aid of charity, and occasionally outside Torbay as well, in the wider Devon area. Shows are family-friendly and suitable for all ages; and rehearsals are conducted in a safe, supportive enviroment.
We pride ourselves on being inclusive, and welcoming anyone who wants to participate in the performing arts into a safe, supportive enviroment.
Previous experience is not required, we are a mixture of beginners and experienced performers.
Benefits of doing theatre with us include gaining increased self confidence, learning basic acting/ performance skills, and public speaking, making new friends, developing literacy and teamwork skills, as well as learning about local history, culture and legends. We have a very good track record with members who are developing their basic skills, as well as their performance skills, through participation with us, which all members are able to list on their CVs when looking for employment, or further education.
Another large part of our ethos is to bring theatre to less traditional venues, and to those who may not experience theatre in a formal setting, hence many of our performances take place in pubs, hotels, nursing homes, social clubs local community festivals, community halls, and even the street, rather than in theatres.
We also have links with some film extra and general casting agencies, who sometimes contact us when there is a film in the area, to invite our members to audition, which of course allows our members, if they so wish and if suitable for the film requirements, to experience further acting work, and develop their skills and possibly their CVs.
Members need to be aged 16 or over, (under-16 for specific roles with written parental permission only) other than that the only restrictions are that they are reliable, prompt for rehearsals and show set-ups, and that they can work within a team, and make an effort with whatever they do.
We occasionally accept members younger than 16, but only with the permission and attendance of parents, as we are not a "youth theatre" group, and a lot of shows may be performed in age restricted venues such as pubs, as well as in venues such as function rooms, community centres, etc, and even sometimes as street theatre.
We welcome enquiries from prospective new members, and from new venues seeking entertainment or shows - we are happy to do projects in aid of charity, as well as for ourselves. Many of our members are also available for other shows or castings which have a direct connection with the South Devon area.
New members are more than welcome!
