A hundred years ago, Torquay was just a fishing village. On the heights around were private estates in which wealthy men and their families lived. None was better positioned than the country retreat built in 1820 for the eminent Harley Street surgeon of his day, Dr. Sutherland. In the passing of time, many of these estates were broken up, but Dr. Sutherland's Hall remains a centre of hospitality ... as a truly first-class hotel - Lincombe Hall.
Step inside, there is Georgian elegance at every turn. Subtle colours and appropriate furnishings in spacious rooms create detailed comfort. The Victorian chic is no better exemplified than the dining room, with its plaster work, barrelled ceiling and elegant pillars. The five acres of gardens too, are a beautifully kept legacy of earlier times. The elegance may be Victorian, but the comforts are right up-to-date. Each of the guest rooms has an en-suite bathroom, complementary toiletries, hairdryer, beverage tray and colour television among its appointments. At hand is a medley of amenities, including an outdoor heated pool, sauna, solarium, jacuzzi, tennis, putting green, croquet lawn and games room. When dining at Lincombe hall one is constantly reminded that Devon is one of our most fruitful counties - plump ducks, tender chickens, and the rivers abound with salmon. The hotel has a coffee shop that offers a range of specialist coffee, day time snacks and unapologetically wicked confections served with Devon clotted cream. Set amid the palm trees and award-winning beaches, this stylish hotel is just a stroll from Torquay's harbourside, international marina and town centre.
