Where to see seals in the bay

Grey seals are resident in Torbay year-round. The colony is small – maybe 20-30 individuals – but spotting one isn’t difficult if you know where to look.

Berry Head

The cliffs east of the lighthouses, looking down into Mansands Bay. Seals haul out on the rocks at low tide. Bring binoculars.

Maidencombe

Off the headland north of the beach. Curious bull seals occasionally swim into the cove and stare at swimmers. Don’t approach.

Saltern Cove

A marine conservation zone south of Goodrington. Easy access from the coast path, regular sightings on calm summer days.

Boat trips

The Western Lady ferries from Torquay and Brixham harbour run wildlife trips in summer that almost always find seals. Allow 90 minutes, around GBP15.

Best time of year: late summer through autumn, when the seals haul out to moult. Best time of day: low tide, mid-morning.
