Agatha Christie’s Torquay: a walking tour

Agatha Christie was born in Torquay in 1890 and lived in the bay for most of her life. The town’s relationship with its most famous daughter is everywhere if you know where to look.

Start at Torquay Museum on Babbacombe Road. The Agatha Christie Gallery houses one of the largest collections of her possessions outside Greenway, including the typewriter she used for half her career.

From the museum, walk down to the harbour. The Imperial Hotel features in “Peril at End House” and “Sleeping Murder”. The Princess Pier was where she demonstrated the long-distance swim that earned her a place in the swimming club.

Then up to Hesketh Crescent and the Osborne Hotel, a Regency terrace where she set “The Murder on the Links”. Finally, if you have a car, drive out to Greenway House (National Trust), her summer home on the river Dart – the rooms are preserved exactly as she left them and the gardens are spectacular.

The whole walking section takes two hours, with stops. There’s also a self-guided trail booklet available at the museum.
