The five best fish & chips on the bay, tested and ranked
We ate a lot of fish and chips. These are the five worth your time.
1. The Beach Brixham
On the harbour edge with day-boat haddock straight off the quay. The batter is light, the chips have proper edges, the mushy peas are made in-house. Around GBP12 for cod and chips. Eat in the window seat.
2. Hanbury’s of Babbacombe
Long-established, busy at every service, gets it right every time. The fish is from Brixham, the chips are triple-cooked. Takeaway only, but Oddicombe beach is a 30-second walk.
3. Drift Wood Cafe, Goodrington
Smaller portions, sit-down, no shouting. Worth the extra spend for the location – tables outside, beach view, dog welcome.
4. Simply Fish, Torquay
On the harbour and good for a quick stop. The cod is the safer bet over the haddock here.
5. Just Fryin’, Paignton
Old-school chippy, no frills, queue at 5pm Friday. The chips are the star.
