Pubs with proper Sunday lunch

A good Sunday roast in the bay requires booking, often a week ahead. These five are worth the lead time.

The Cary Arms, Babbacombe

Beachside, two roast choices, beef Wellington if you book it. Sit on the terrace if the weather’s right.

The Drum Inn, Cockington

Thatched, in the village, properly hearty plates. The beef is the pick.

The Maritime Inn, Brixham

Half a mile back from the harbour, locals’ pub, exceptional value. Book the back room.

The Thatched Tavern, Maidencombe

Tiny, popular, fantastic pork. Three sittings on a Sunday – book the 12:30 to walk it off after.

The Bishop’s Place, Paignton

Less well known than the others, runs a generous Sunday menu, friendly service.
