Agatha Christie’s Greenway: a day trip from the bay
Greenway House was Agatha Christie’s summer home for the last 30 years of her life. The National Trust took it over in 2000 and opened it more or less untouched – the books on the shelves are her books, the dog’s basket is still by the fire, the boathouse is the one where Marlene Tucker is murdered in “Dead Man’s Folly”.
Getting there is half the appeal. From Torquay or Paignton, take the Dartmouth Steam Railway to Kingswear, the ferry across the Dart to Dartmouth, then the Greenway Ferry up-river to the house. The whole journey is itself in three different Christie novels.
Allow a full day. The gardens are spectacular – 30 acres of woodland walks dropping to the river – and the house tour takes about 90 minutes including the boathouse. There’s a tea room. The cafe at Greenway quay does decent sandwiches.
Book ferry and house entry together to save the queue at peak.
